On one of our road trips north through the Yukon Territory we stopped just south of the bridge over the Takhanne River at the "Million Dollar Falls Campground". A short, steep hike will take you down from the parking area to the river where you can see this unique falls from several vantage points, including this one I chose to paint.
This watercourse eventually finds its way to the Gulf of Alaska, joining the Alsek River just south of Yakutat.
Back in 1898 and 1899 my stepfather's father, Cecil S. Willis, packed into the Yukon gold fields on the famous "Dalton Trail", which followed these rivers much of the way. In reading grandpa's journal, he never mentioned the falls by name but I like to think that he trekked through this area over 100 years ago. I inherited his old Colt .45, the one he packed on the trail.
